Katja Kaukonen (b. 1968) is a writer and a teacher of language and literature. Her debut novel Odelma (2011) and collection of short stories Holy Water (2012) demonstrated how Kaukonen’s masterful interweaving of narrative and spellbinding language reinforces the mystical ambiance exuded by her stories.
“Kaukonen’s characters’ lives advance in mystical and even dark tones, but always towards consolation. Her language is replete with aquatic metaphors. It is descriptive; it ripples and billows like the waves. She tunes her readers in to a frequency where even stories told from the periphery are perfectly audible.” – Keskipohjanmaa on the short story collection Holy Water
