In the opening volume of the Stardust series, Doris Laine, daughter of a bootlegger from Rööperi, pursues her dreams of becoming a movie star while diving into the dangerous but oh-so-captivating underworld of 1930s Helsinki. There, Doris begins living a double life that she imagines she can control.

The story, which begins with the repeal of Prohibition, depicts a modernizing Helsinki and the early days of the Finnish film industry. It contains forbidden love, friendship, betrayals, and is dominated by a tantalizing sense of danger.
