The first title in the upcoming ‘Laundrette on Park Street’ series. Let’s iron out these creases of love!
Thirty-something Inka Hakaniemi returns to her hometown after several years in Australia. Her time abroad has left her with a broken heart and a noticeably empty bank account. But living upstairs at her parents’ house soon gives way to independence when Inka decides to open a 1950s-style laundrette near the city center.
As the summer sun beats down on the steps of the laundrette and the washing machines spin the sheets of summer residents, Inka feels like she’s at the beginning of something new. The laundromat slowly gathers a loyal customer base and regular visitors, rockabilly music plays in the background, and Inka befriends independent women her own age. So when one day, a figure from her past in Australia appears at the laundrette’s door, Inka is ready to take on the stain-removal project of her own life.
Laundry Day kicks off author Maija Kajanto’s new Laundrette on Park Street series. Kajanto’s previous Birch Tree Cafe series charmed readers and introduced a new shining star to Finnish contemporary fiction.

“A tasty warm and delicious novel to curl up with” —Jenny Colgan on ‘Summer at the Birch Tree Cafe’ by Maija Kajanto
‘Inka’s laundrette stood out nicely from the familiar cafes and bookshops settings, the reminiscence of Australia and the sister who stayed there sometimes took me to the other side of the world, and the unexpected new friendships constantly put a smile on my face.’ —’kansikuvassa’ bookstagram, 4/5 stars
‘Perfect, wonderful and reliable Kajanto. The book captivated me and Inka is my absolute favourite. I’d love to go to that laundromat myself, it sounded like such a lovely place. The ‘Birch Tree Café’ series had baking tips, this one had laundry tips! Really fun, different and nice detail.’ —’essireads’ bookstagram 5/5 stars
