The Pronouns

Pronominit

The End of the World is here, welcome onboard!

A passenger plane takes off, heading for another continent.

It soon becomes clear that the departure was chaotic, and the cargo hold was packed carelessly. Some passenger seats are covered with tarps, catering has been forgotten, and the selection on the service cart is strange. The only available in-flight movie is James Cameron’s Titanic. The passengers are served by a single, tireless steward.

A priest, a pro wrestler, an artist, a teacher, and an influencer reflect on the loved ones they left behind on the burning Earth, the choices they made, and the ones they didn’t.

What could have been done differently to keep the seasons from unraveling? What is the strange fungus spreading everywhere? Where is the plane headed?

Before morning comes, the steward must take care of all the stowaways he finds—and uncover what lies beneath the tarps.

The Pronouns is a novel about the end of permanence, the normalization of emergencies, and a future slipping out of reach. What is “I,” and why is “you” needed on a journey into the unknown? What can we reach for, and what does “we” even mean?

Reviews

“Weselius’s previous novel, Nimetön (Nameless, WSOY 2023), was a true gem. After that, expectations for her new work may be unreasonably high. In THE PRONOUNS, the elements are numerous, and their equation is complex—at times even obscure. But it is precisely in that mystery where the power of Weselius’s prose lies this time.
The novel lingers in the mind and challenges the reader to reflect. What does anything in this Here and Now truly mean? Weselius’s writing contains sharp insights and a forceful use of language. […] This book might be an act born of love for life. Despite all its dystopian ingredients, what ultimately shines through are a longing for nature and a sense of awe at existence.” —Outi Hytönen, Suomen Kuvalehti

“Hanna Weselius ingeniously turns the traditional novel narrative upside down with her extraordinary images and imaginative structural solutions.” —Jari Olavi Hiltunen, Satakunnan kansa newspaper

“The dynamic between the characters created by Weselius and the theme described in the afterword are fascinating, but the most astonishing aspect of the novel is its supreme, elegant sophistication.” —Outi Hytönen, Suomen Kuvalehti about Hanna Weselius’s Nimetön

“It is admirable how Alma! succeeds in being simultaneously wise, feisty and elegant. Weselius’ original voice is a valuable addition to Finnish literature.” —Antti Majander, Helsingin Sanomat newspaper on Weselius’ debut Alma!
